Beer Can Chest Destruction - Part 3
Let the chest destruction begin! Now I have done a fair amount
of home remodel, and normally taking things apart is quick and dirty,
with intent to discard the old materials. For this situation however, the
trick was how to get the chest into pieces without touching the fronts
of the beer can sheets.
The chest was made of a somewhat soft wood, with the uncut panels wrapped around and nailed to the box. My initial concern was that some form of adhesive was also used, but starting on a back corner on some of the scrap metal, turns out just nails, nails, and more nails. Now envision trying to pull 100's of nails without being able to use a hammer to pry them out! With the inside of the chest made of wood, the only solution I could think of was to drive out the nails from the inside. Out came the wood chisel, digging into the wood until a nail point was exposed, and then driving the nail far enough until I could grasp the head with a pair of pliers. After two painful days of the above (50 year old metal is still really sharp and got lots of nicks and cuts), the end result is what you see below. The uncut panels were now mostly flat, but still very dirty and grimy, but cleaning them would have to wait for another day. Total chest destruction took literally 11-12 hours of labor, spread over two days. |
